In the first article of our series, we talked about getting the most out of life by prioritizing both the activities and the relationships that mean the most to you. Now it’s time to explore how these two elements work together—because some of life’s best memories are made when you bring your favorite people and favorite pastimes together.
It’s not just about checking off a list of fun things to do or scheduling coffee with an old friend. The magic happens when you create intentional overlap between what you love and who you love. Think of it as your own “joy intersection”: invite a close friend to your favorite walking
trail, teach your grandchild how to bake a family recipe that brings your most cherished memories of your childhood to mind, or join a book club that gathers some of your favorite people for thoughtful conversation.
Sometimes the secret to maximizing enjoyment is expanding your circle a little. If you’re passionate about an activity but are not connected with folks who can help you live out this important part of your life, consider finding or creating a group that shares your interest. Whether it’s hiking, pickleball, creative writing, or volunteering for a local cause, shared passions often spark strong bonds—and add new layers of fun and meaning.
At the same time, consider the people you love the most and explore what adventures you could pursue together. Maybe there’s a new sport, workshop, or travel destination to experience as a team. Shared novelty can reignite relationships and create stories you revisit for years to come.
Being selective and strategic about your experiences doesn’t mean life has to be rigid—it means you’re placing your time and energy where joy has the greatest chance to grow. A little curiosity goes a long way: ask yourself, “Who would I love to share this with?” or “What could we discover together that we haven’t tried before?”
