Designing Your Year, On Purpose

As one year draws to a close and another begins, millions make New Year’s resolutions—promises that often fizzle before February ends. But what if there’s a more meaningful (and effective) way to welcome a new year? Instead of another year of vague intentions or self-imposed restrictions, it’s possible to plan with clarity, purpose, and enthusiasm. Let’s consider an effective alternative to New Year’s resolutions with an actionable guide that helps you reflect on your past year, set meaningful goals for 2026, and prioritize what matters most—empowering you to move forward in your financial and life journey.

Unlike traditional resolutions, this is not about restricting spending, meticulously accounting for every dollar, or never eating your favorite calorie-rich food ever again. Instead, it’s an opportunity to intentionally align your focus, energy, and financial resources with what brings you the greatest enjoyment and fulfillment.

A Reflective Process Rooted in What You Value

Rather than creating a list of things to give up or new habits to force, imagine approaching the year ahead by thoughtfully designing the life you want. That’s the spirit behind the New Year Planning Resource, a guided process developed to help you shape your next year around what matters most to you.

Here’s the snapshot of how it works:

  1. Reflect on Your Last Year: First, take a look back. What made this past year meaningful? Considering the key areas of life—ranging from family, finances, and health, to experiences, community, and personal growth—jot down the most significant highlights and milestones in each area (on the free download “2026 Planning Resource”). For example, Perhaps you reconnected with a friend you lost contact with or you started volunteering at a non-profit you are excited about.
  1. Assess Importance: Next, rate how important each area truly is to you, on a scale from 1 (not important) to 5 (extremely important). For instance, Maybe you found a fun place to go out on Thursday nights but your health has slipped and you might decide your health is more important to you than recreation. This step helps clarify your priorities and creates a “map” of where your energy and resources are best spent.
  1. Connect to Your Identity: Now tie each area to your identity: consider how they connect to the core elements that define who you are and what you hope to become. Are you focusing on things that really matter to your sense of self, or are there gaps? This is your opportunity to bring your goals and your identity into better alignment. Here’s a helpful example: let’s say you want to expand your social network and you deeply want to connect more by building local relationships. You’d highlight this and start considering what practical steps might move you more in this direction—what parts of your life that are of greatest interest to you that do you want to share with others? Perhaps it’s causes that are important to you, or your faith, or specific interests that you find fascinating.
  1. Prioritize for 2026: With clearer self-awareness, choose which areas deserve your greatest focus in the coming year. It’s about intentionality—giving priority to what resonates most deeply and helps you to live the life you want! Emphasize the TOP areas you want to prioritize (highlight them, circle them, underline…. note that these are the FIRST AREAS OF FOCUS!)
  1. Goal Setting & Planning: For each area that’s a priority to you, it’s good to set inspiring goals for 2026. Then make concrete, actionable plans for each—big or small—that you can realistically pursue in the year ahead.

This process moves beyond fleeting resolutions.

Intentional planning is about having your resources (your efforts, your time, and your money) empower the life that’s most meaningful to you, and not just reacting to expectations or circumstances… and certainly not curtailing the enjoyment you get out of life.
